HS Codes
Common HS code mistakes that delay clearance
The recurring classification and document inconsistencies that create questions at the border.
Several avoidable mistakes appear repeatedly in import files. The invoice may use a marketing term while the packing list uses a technical term, or the supplier's proposed code may not match the product's material and function.
Other risks include copying a code from an old shipment without checking whether the product changed, using a broad category when a more specific subheading applies, omitting composition or end-use information, and mixing several products under one description.
Before dispatch, reconcile the product description, HS code, quantity, unit, weight, value, country of origin, and consignee across the invoice, packing list, transport document, and customs declaration. Ask questions before the cargo leaves Türkiye.
Classification is a technical customs matter. When the financial or regulatory impact is material, request a formal opinion from your customs adviser or the relevant authority.
